This site is a collaboration between ARTSEDGE, The Music Educator's National Conference and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. It is designed to bring the world of Duke Ellington alive for students and others interested in his life and music. It features:
ARTSEDGE is the National Arts and Education Information Network, operating under a cooperative agreement between the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the US Department of Education. The mission of ARTSEDGE is to help artists, teachers, and students gain access to and/or share information, resources, and ideas that support the arts as a core subject area in the K-12 curriculum.
MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the world's largest arts education organization, is the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. More than 80,000 members represent all levels of teaching from pre-school to graduate school. Since 1907, MENC has worked to ensure that every student has access to a well-balanced, comprehensive, and high-quality program of music instruction taught by qualified teachers. MENC's activities and resources have been largely responsible for the establishment of music education as a profession, for the promotion and guidance of music study as an integral part of the school curriculum, and for the development of the National Standards for Arts Education.
The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History is home to many of our nation's treasures, including the Duke Ellington Collection. As part of its commitment to preserving America's jazz heritage, NMAH supports the Duke Ellington Youth Project, the Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and other projects devoted to encouraging creativity and exploration in this uniquely American form of music.
Unless otherwise noted, the images in this site are from the Duke Ellington Collection at the Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. The number following any title or caption on photographs from the Archives Center collections are the negative numbers, which should be used when inquiring about any images. With the exception of Harlem Airshaft, taken from The Chronological Classics:1945, Classics Records, all music is from Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington, compiled 1994 BMG Music and copyright 1994 Smithsonian Institution Press (DMC2 / DMK2-1141). Audio clips are recorded in streaming media for the Web and cannot be downloaded or reproduced, with the exception of the any MIDI files created by MENC.
All curriculum materials developed by MENC are available for use by teachers and students. Teachers should refer to the Teacher's How To for more information on using these materials in the classroom. Additional information and curriculum resources available on ARTSEDGE can be found here.
The development team would like to thank all of those who contributed to make this project the interactive opportunity that it is for teachers and students all over the world. Through this online collaboration, it is hoped that students will develop an understanding and appreciation of the life and work of one of the world's greatest composers. We are grateful to have had the support and assistance of the following people:
Carolyn Jones Howard of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, for her assistance and patience in gathering the student poetry, both in audio and print;
Stephen Hansgen of Spoondog Productions, for giving freely of his time and expertise in the areas of audio production and music history;
Ted Leach, for his invaluable assistance in the development of the interactive areas of this site;
Omar Wynn and Juan Smith of the Graphics Department of the National Museum of American History, for their assistance in photographing the Duke Ellington Youth Project artwork;
Anne Keubler and the staff of the Archives Center, NMAH, for guiding us through the hundreds of Ellington-related items in their care.
