Duke Ellington is a giant of twentieth-century music by
almost any standard. He brought entirely original ideas about harmonies
and tonal coloring to his music. He integrated highly contrasting elements
into a unified whole, mastering an astute balance between tradition and
innovation, composition and improvisation, individual and group. His fate
as a composer was inextricably linked to that of his orchestra, because
he wrote solely for his band.
